The Luna Road Light LR-200 Series.

Tunnel Zurqui, considered one of the most dangerous roads in Costa Rica and perhaps Central America, has been for many years a safety concern for the Costa Rican authorities. Today, Luna Road, a manufacturer of solar powered LED road studs, has installed it's solar-powered single-sided LED light to illuminate the road inside Tunnel Zurqui.
According to the Costa Rican authorities, the project is intended to reduce the number of fatal accidents that occur every year at this location. Tunnel Zurqui's main safety issue is the lack of visibility drivers face at the tunnel, especially late during the day and at night.
According to the company, Luna Road was created to "bring night-time road safety to drivers all around the planet." The LR-200, Luna Road's flagship product, was installed along Tunnel Zurqui to increase visibility and provide nigh-time illumination. The single-sided LED light requires approximately 8 hours to fully charge, in order to provide a maximum of 12 hours of light. It relies on a Ni-Mh battery, which has a battery life of approximately four years.
Luna Road has made the headlines in recent months (see Luna Road Illuminates Olympic Stadium in Mexico City) and it has expanded its presence worldwide. The company, which came up with perhaps not the most obvious application of solar technology, has found success in promoting their products, all in the name of road safety.
Richard Sabga, from Luna Road, said to GreenMomentum that they believe that "spreading the use of solar technology will create an eco-friendly trend all over the roads. We believe in saving lives, preserving the environment, and beautifying night-time roads around the globe."
