The government of Chiapas has committed close to 10,000 hectares of jatropha, to be used as raw material for the production of biodiesel.

The Colombian government will begin the construction of a new biofuel plant in the Mexican state of Chiapas. The agreement between the Mexican President Felipe Calderon and his Colombian counterpart Alvaro Uribe is part of a Mesoamerican cooperation agreement among Mexico, Belize, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama.
According to Colombia's agriculture minister, Andres Fernandez, the investment in equipment and public works will be close to 2 million dollars. The construction of the new plant is expected to be concluded in December, three months before it is scheduled to begin production.
Fernandez also said that the government of Chiapas had committed close to 10,000 hectares for the farming of jatropha, as well as palm oil, to be used as raw materials in the production of biodiesel.
The Colombian Corporation of Agricultural Research will be in charge of the construction of the plant, which is expected to have a daily production capacity of close to 20,000 liters.
